Giselle was born into a Salvadorian and Honduran family. Her mother rocked an amazing afro all her life but when Giselle was born, she had straight hair. She had straight hair for most of her childhood up until she was 7. She got her first haircut and her hair just started magically curling up. The first couple of years she had curly hair, it was a rat's nest. Frizzy, unmanaged, and all over the place. She didn't seem to care all that much until middle school. She didn’t know how to treat her curls and as a young, ethnic woman, that made her feel “invalid” in her own culture. She felt as if she wasn't meant to be part of something that's her own and as a result of this, she got really insecure about her natural hair. All through 7th and 8th grade, she non stop straightened her hair. Whenever she showered, she hated how poofy it got and hated the feeling of knowing she has to put in all that work again and again to get her hair straight. She also hated her natural hair because she couldn't do basic hairstyles and participate in fun hair trends. She was like this for a couple of years up until sophomore year. During 10th grade, she started to try to treat her natural hair. Her curls started to gain a pattern back and about 1 year later her curls are showstopping. As if today, she has voluminous, shiny, and beautiful hair. I'm so proud of her progress and I know she is too.
