Sun Protection for Curls

You know how were constantly told to wear sunscreen during the summer? And that our skin will become dry, wrinkly, saggy, etc? Guess what, that happens to hair too.

Sun damaged hair just has different side effects; frizz, color fading, not moisturized, etc. Once spring rolls around and temps start rising, I bring out my Fable Mane Hair Mist (I should be using it all year but I’m lazy.) Some organic ingredients have solar protective properties and if you’re lucky, you can find them in your everyday products. Such as, propolis, shea butter, aloe vera, strawberry/raspberry, etc.

So start hunting for products with those key ingredients during high UV seasons. A simple google search will give you a collection of sprays/mists/products/etc that are made for sun protection. My fav is the Aveda Sun Care Protective Hair Vial.

I know I always hype up oil, but for heat and high temps, use a lot smaller portions. What happens when you cook food in oil? Exactly, fried. So avoid drenching hair with oil during summer. Use portion control for much better results. If youre a beginner to curls and just recently starting to embrace your natural hair, be careful!!! As always, my DMs and website messages are always open<33

Swimming With Curls

Its not a secret that chlorine, lake water, oceans, etc, dry your hair out. But how can I avoid it? If you can, just don’t get your hair wet, but I know for my swimmers and people who just wanna have fun, that isn’t really an option.

Protecting your hair from that type of water starts from knowing why its damaging your hair in the first place. Chlorine is a disinfectant and used for bleaching pools so it proceeds to strip your natural oils right out. Praying for my swimmer girls rn!! After your swim, you will most likely experience chlorine-damaged hair, scalp issues, and more dandruff. So fun!

Now onto how to protect your gorgeous, amazing curls. The absolute best way to protect your hair, is a swim cap. I know not all girls wanna pull up in a swim cap so here are some natural ways to protect your curls. Damp your hair with tap water before swimming, use a leave in after rinsing the chlorine out, or coconut treatments before swim. What if my hair is already chlorine-damaged? Deep conditioner, baking soda/water-3:1 ratio mixture, and clarifying shampoos are going to be your best friends. After reviving your curls, make sure too use protective routines for future swims. As always, my DMs and website messages are always open<33
